Most non-residential facilities listed in this article provide activities and services centered around enrichment programs, sports, arts and crafts, recreation, peer support groups, crisis intervention, life skills, counseling, anger management, tutoring, dance classes, seasonal camps, health services and health education.
The roots of youth center models are British institutions such as the Mechanics' Institutes, which later became English public libraries, and the World War I Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA). The YMCA was created as an alternative to the open
classrooms of many public schools, which at the time were filled with gambling, bullying and prostitution.
During World War II these institutions were replaced with USO centers for active duty members of the military, and American Red Cross and USO centers for service men and women.
At first these centers offered recreation and a range of services to young servicemen and servicewomen. By the early 1950s, they began focusing more on career exploration and moving into education, training, and employment into trades, crafts and healthcare, and finally in the 1960s it provided a free public income tax preparation service. By the late 1960s and early 1970s many of the buildings were acquired by local governments to be renovated for reuse as community centers. Originally, most youth centers were single-room facilities housed within a church or school facility giving them the nickname "Pillbox" among the youth who frequented the centers.
While the "Pillbox" term, can refer to any YMCA building from around the World War II era, it is more generically used as a slang term for any or all of the landmarks representative of that era. For example, Catholic Community Services converted and renovated a grouping
