In UK English, all of these activities are called youth work. Many of the activities that youth centers offer are to give young people opportunities to engage in adult activities, like a formal dance. But some youth centers also use their resources to bring awareness and understanding to social issues, such as bullying. Many youth centers organize and implement fundraising programs and events in which they come up with new and fun ways to raise money and collect donations to further run and maintain the activities of the center.
When founded, the primary purpose of a YMCA, YWCA or YWHA was to offer programs and services to supplement basic education, and provide development services for all young people, especially those who needed the most. These included programs to help immigrants get acclimated and integrate into American culture and society, such as a class in the US flag. One of the main activities of the earliest YMCA's, often connected directly to recent immigrants, was education, offering courses in reading and writing, and they helped students with their English lessons.
Early YMCA's also encouraged youths to participate in traditional American activities: the Boy Scouts, Camp Fire Girls, and Little League were all originally organized at local YMCA's. For rural and small urban communities, in towns and cities which often did not have athletic or amusement park facilities, the YMCA often combined these roles, running the "town gymnasium" which provided a place for exercise as well as a range of athletic activities.
In the 1960s, the movement spread to high schools, where living conditions were better in some parts of the world, such as the United States, where the opening of the first YMCA date to 1851. By the late 1970s, many youth centers found their new roles in making a social change by addressing concerns of racism, sexism, and the marginalization of gay and transgendered teenagers, which often led to violence between groups.
